Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and Social Security Disability
Social Security Disability Lawyer
Typically, applying for and receiving social security disability benefits can take many months. But what if your disabling condition is so severe that you cannot wait? Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a disabling condition on the Compassionate Allowance List, which qualifies an individual for an expedited approval process.
What is Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome?
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a congenital condition in which parts of the left side of the heart (mitral valve, left ventricle, aortic valve, and aorta) fail to develop completely. This condition develops in utero, and forces the right ventricle to supply blood to the entirety of the lungs and body to compensate for the malformed left ventricle. Babies born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome are usually born with two openings that allow them to survive by letting blood pass from the right to the left side of the heart. However, these openings close naturally several days after birth, so affected infants are usually started on medications to keep these openings from closing until surgery can be performed. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is lethal if left untreated. It can be corrected with surgery, and the prognosis for those who undergo surgery depends upon the size health of the right ventricle.
